The South Georgia Technical College chapter of the National Technical Honor Society inducted 34 new members in a ceremony in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on the Americus campus recently.

As his four fellow commissioners raised their hands in unaninous approval of the motion to OK a bid calling for the construction of a fire/EMS station in the north Lee County Smithville community, Lee Commission Chair Ed Duffy couldn't contain himself.

For eight years, talk about the construction of a new fire/EMS station near the north Lee County community of Smithville has been just that: talk.

Let's start this with a disclaimer: Any person willing to potentially hang himself out to dry by running for political office deserves a measure of respect from the populace for doing so, no matter how good or bad a candidate that person might actually be.

A car chase that started in the community of Leslie last Tuesday and ended up in the depths of Sumter County in front of a residence, 376 Wiggins Road, involving not only the Leslie City Police, Lee County Sheriff's K-9 unit and Smithville City Police, but deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, is still the talk of the community.

Early Tuesday morning, Leslie Police Officer Cecil R. Mathews II was on patrol in the city around West Allen Street, when he noticed two vehicles, a semi-truck and trailer and a blue 1999 Chevrolet Blazer S-10 traveling west around the Howell Street area.

Special agents and the Sumter County Sheriff's Department arrested three people for attempting to sale marijuana across guard lines to inmates at the Sumter County Correctional Institution.

An Americus prison guard has been arrested for taking contraband inside Sumter County Correctional Institute.

As reported in Wednesday's edition of the Times-Recorder, an employee of Sumter County was arrested by special agents from the local Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Region III Americus office, and transported by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office to the Sumter County Law Enforcement Center.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says a prison guard has been accused of carrying unspecified contraband into Sumter County Correctional Institution.
