E. Northport man arrested as cops shut down fireworks display

An East Northport man was arrested late Friday and charged with producing an unlicensed fireworks display as he launched it for a crowd outside a Smithtown residence.

Suffolk police said Thomas Egan, 42, of 15 Crest Dr. was setting off fireworks from a professionally made launching platform at his brother-in-law's house at 25 Merrivale Dr., Smithtown, at 9:05 p.m. A crowd of about 50 people were watching when Suffolk County Police Fourth Precinct Crime Section officers shut down the display.

Don't people have anything better else to do? then to rat people out for fireworks to the overpaid, lazy, and useless Suffolk County Police Department? that does nothing for the gang problem thats out of control.

The "crotchety" neighbor is the only one with a brain. Freedom and liberty do not mean the freedom to break laws and ignore the safety of others, nor does it mean the liberty to be a public nuisance. Many Americans think that they have the "freedom" and "liberty" to do anything they please. Just look where this attitude has gotten us: soaring death rates on our highways, high crime rates and overflowing jails, corporate arrogance and illegality; schools that don't teach; corruption among elected officials; and worse.

No, I'm not leaving. I'm staying on to work with the crotchety.

jeez these neighbors have nothing better to do than let a guy who spends his money put on a nice show for the neighborhood, if fireworks are so unsafe why are they legal in other states? Its b/c we are not allowed to do anything on long island, love paying the highest taxes in the country to be able to do nothing on your own property.

It's funny how the sale of fireworks is legal here in Texas, but there are very few people who locally buy or use them on the 4th. That's mostly due to the high fines if you're caught using them in any city limits. By contrast, the sale, possession, and use of fireworks in NY are totally illegal, yet every household on the Island has their own backyard display. 100% of that stuff is smuggled in, and the cops generally turn their backs on them for the day. It sounds like this guy wasn’t just shooting off bottle rockets. He was launching commercial grade (read – highly dangerous) fireworks in a residential neighborhood, endangering everyone. Cops did the right thing.

With a professional launch platform and a track record of being safe for years, this guy was hardly 'reckless'. His neighbors should get a life. You would think that for one day they could just live and let live.

Fourth Precinct crime section officers had checked the address in the afternoon and seen that the launching platform had been set up.
So they couldn't speak to them then. They had to wait until they commenced and ruin most everyones evening. I am sure they released two pedophiles or gang bangers to make room for him. Fireworks are legal here. We seem to make it through the evening.

Years? He had only done it twice, calling that a years long track record of safety is extremely misleading.

Congrats to SCPD 4th Pct. after three years of police work, they were able to make an arrest. They must have been the only Pct. in N.Y. that was working last night. I don't know why we have laws it this country, If it's illegal (be it fireworks or people it's O.K.) Go ahead, have your fun, and torch your neighbors house. It's not your fault the neighbor has to stand in front of his house with a charged garden hose to put out the fire you started. After all you have rights, and you can break the law anytime you want, dam everyone else....Can't wait until the winter, when little Jimmy & Mary are sitting at the table and their is no food, or heat because daddy had to be a big shot and spend the money on illegal fireworks. Then again he always has the gas can's in the garage, he can dump them on the kitchen floor, and fire them up. God bless America (ops maybe I can't say that) because this country is done for, it's gone right down the tubes.......Yes you have rights A-hole....

Just read the article about the six year old girl in Bayville, who had her thighs and legs burned, by kids throwing fireworks into a fire near her on the beach. Funny thing the parents don't want to press charges. I would lock up the parents and the kids for child abuse.......but then again, breaking the law is O.K. with a lot of people......
