Families come together to honor lost firefighters
“I guess you can say it's bittersweet”
It's been 76 years since her father, Fordham Odell, died in the line of duty as a volunteer firefighter, and Alyce Odell Brown still remembers the doctor saying her dad only had a sprained back.
Odell, 50, died three days after he suffered a heart attack while fighting a fire in 1932 on Cleveland Street in North Bellmore for the Smithville South Hook, Ladder and Engine Company. But it took some research from active firefighters and an in-law, whose hobby is genealogy, to find Odell's family members. Read more
