LSMSA to host informational meetings for prospective students, parents

Prospective students and their parents will have 12 opportunities this fall to attend an informational meeting to learn more about the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts, located in Natchitoches. One of those meetings will be held in St. Tammany Parish at the public library in Slidell, 555 Robert Blvd., at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22, in its large meeting room.

Slidell man gets 40 years for forcible rape of child

A Slidell man was sentenced to 40 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to charges of forcible rape, sexual battery and failure to register as a sex offender, according to District Attorney Walter Reed's office. Caleb Hughes, 28, was sentenced as a career criminal because of a previous conviction in Massachusetts, a spokesman for Reed said.

To settle discrimination lawsuit, Slidell landlord pays $15,000 and...

A Slidell landlord who was sued for discrimination has agreed to turn over management of his properties to an outside company and will pay the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center $15,000 to settle the lawsuit, the Fair Housing Action Center said Tuesday . The center, which investigates housing discrimination complaints, sued Steven Stubenrauch in federal court in December 2013, alleging that Stubenrauch violated the federal Fair Housing Act by repeatedly misrepresenting the availability of his advertised rental property to African Americans.

Bridge in Pearl River near Slidell closed

The Pearl River swing bridge on U.S. 90 east of Slidell is shut down to vehicular traffic, according to the state highway department. The barrier gate on the Mississippi side of the span became stuck in the down position Monday morning, blocking traffic.

Slidell detective injured in weekend crash still in coma, funeral arrangements set for friend

A Slidell police detective who was seriously injured in a Sunday morning crash on Old Spanish Trail in Slidell remains in a coma and in critical condition, Slidell police said. Detective John Cole, 31, who was off duty at the time of the wreck, lost control of his Jeep Wrangler westbound on Old Spanish Trail near Interstate 10 and overturned in a ditch.

Shooting threat at Salmen High a prank, authorities say

Social media threats to "shoot up" Salmen High School were pranks, police said, but they caused a major stir at the Slidell public school Tuesday, with police officers on campus throughout the day. Police learned of the threats early and were at the school when it opened, according to Detective Daniel Seuzeneau, a Police Department spokesman.

Off-duty Slidell Police officer hurt in fatal car accident
