Pike Trail League formed 60 years ago
Sixty years ago, in January of 1948, superintendents from seven school districts formed an athletic league they named the Pike Trail League. The organizational meeting was held in Mankato's Correl Hotel on a Thursday evening. The school's represented were Burr Oak, Jewell, Randall, Scandia, Courtland and Simpson. The league was created to provide a sports circuit for six-man football games, basketball games and track.
Dale Boyles, Mankato, was a teacher and the assistant boys' sports coach at Courtland in 1948 and in on the plans. His mentor was his high school teacher and coach, Raymond Stewart, one of the league organizers. Read more
