This "Civil Commitment" is really criminal incarceration under a different name and without the constitutional protections of a real criminal procedure.
From a civil liberties standpoint, it would be FAR less troubling if they simply just gave child molesters longer or even life sentences without the possiblity of parole. These so-called "Civil Commitments" are no way to handle the problem. We're entering a "slippery slope" if we allow the government to effectively put people away, possibly even for life, without the rudimentary due process protections a criminal procedure affords. |
