No Liquor Store?: Abc store plan raises ire
“My concern is how many rear-end collisions are we going to have? How many people are going to be T-boned as they enter the store?”
The Catawba County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board wants to open a store in Terrell, but the proposal has angered some residents.
An ABC store is planned near the intersection of N.C. 150 and Sherrills Ford Road, said Randy Isenhower, chairman of the Catawba County ABC Board. Isenhower said the board offered the landowner, TVD LLC, $497,000 to buy the 1 1/2-acre tract.
The ABC board will meet Tuesday to discuss contract negotiations to buy the property.

Land values aren't just about dollars
“Why are they proposing such a beautiful development (the Village at Sherrills Ford) and then they're going to put a recycling center across the street from it? It doesn't make sense”
Mike Melton lives on Slanting Bridge Road in southeast Catawba County. He and his neighbors attended the community forum on March 17 at Sherrills Ford Elementary School, a program organized by the county government to showcase upcoming plans for the southeast Catawba County area. Among them: a passive use park on Little Mountain Road, a new library at the proposed Village at Sherrills Ford development, extension of the sewer system, and a new, bigger solid waste convenience center.
That last issue, the planned relocation of the convenience center, is of special concern to the citizens who attended the meeting. The current convenience center on Sherrills Ford Road operates on leased land that is inadequate to accommodate growth. A tract of land off Slanting Bridge Road is one of two possible sites for the new convenience center. At the meeting, county planners compared the Slanting Bridge Road site with another possible site on Steam Plant Road. Read more

Erica Batten: See a figure of freedom come alive
“That links me truly and sincerely to children. They know that I am not patronizing them.”
Imagine a somewhat stooped but powerful black woman. She is dressed in Civil War-era clothing and says her name is Harriet Tubman.
And then she tells you about her life's work: helping black slaves escape to freedom in the North, along a route known as the Underground Railroad.
Too often, the historical figures we read about in school seem less real than the fictional ones on television. It's hard to imagine that someone like Harriet Tubman was a real person -- someone who was afraid sometimes, who laughed, who got cold and sick, who risked her life to help others. We can't talk to her, ask her what her life was like. Read more
