This is a joke - I live not far from this area in Van Nuys and there is only one reason that this area wants to be know as Sherman Oaks - MONEY

Their kids will still go to the same school as mine so should my property be labled as being in Sherman Oaks.

If it comes to pass them there property values instantly increase. If you have one property on Sherman Oaks side of Burbank Blvd and the other on the Van Nuys side with all else being equal the Sherman Oaks side would be worth more. Only because of the name.

Wendy Gruel should never have supported this and probably is only doing so because of political donatations.

When are we going to see that we all live in the same neighborhood whether its Sherman Oaks or Van Nuys. Interesting is that I was telling this story about a month ago to a Sherman Oaks resident and they said it doesn't matter because issues such as crime doesn't know borders. She should know as she had a home invasion robbery and she lives South of the Ventura border.

CITY COUNCIL if you are listening turn this down as its only a money grab and there is no reason on this Earth to make this type of change.

That area is full of auto shops, factories, a porn parlor, and day laborers leaning against the wall outside building supply lots. If calling it "Sherman Oaks" raises property values, I'd be amazed.

One porn parlor is on Oxnard near Sepulveda, close to Orchard Garden Store. Enjoy.

To Van Nuys Homeowner,
Okay so let's say this is "Just a money Grab" So what?? You say we all live in the same neighborhoods so what is the problem of some wanting to change the name of there city to something (To them) that's more appealing, or makes there life investment (For some) worth more? It really sounds like your more jealous than making a solid argument for it not to happen, what if any difference does this make in your life. Will this change make your property worth less because (I assume) you do not live in the boundery in question?
I hope I don't sound like I am attacking you but I just don't see a logical reason for resistance against some who are being proactive in there investments and there neighborhood.

There has been "NO" valid argument presented for the name change to occur. As you well indicate this is just a money grab. OK, so let's all be proactive and change the name of all L.A. Neighborhoods to Beverly Hills. I would be all for that as my property values would rise by 100%. The bottom line is that instead of running for cover with a name change why not make the time investment to improve your own city. With how much time has been spent by these people trying to get their city name change they could of made a difference in the quality of life in Van Nuys. Unfortunately, they want the easy way out!

The pro name change people claim that their area used to be part of Sherman Oaks. They say "RESTORE" the name to this area.

When exactly was this neighborhood part of Sherman Oaks?

How is a name change running for cover? Is it possible, just maybe, that this is only the first step in improving this area? Something the people can see, feel and touch. Real improvements in property values can only increase the hopes and pride of those in this area which in turn will get people off there couch and active in this community. It is just about imposable to get folks excited about a neighborhood watch program when most are scared to death of retaliation and what’s the reward? Some effort and time spent but still houses are robbed people assaulted etc. In other words not much effect in the old way.
Do you honestly think that this small number of people could make a change in the quality of Van Nuys in total?? My guess, no way, time and effort poorly spent. I believe we are responsible to ourselves and in this case, some neighbors. If one community decides to go for it then I for one would not stand in there way and cry "Foul" That is destructive and not in anyone’s best interest. These folks are spending there own time, and moneys to better there little piece of Americana.
Are we to take the Obama world plan in that we should all have the same rewards regardless of the INDIVIDUAL or group efforts put forth? In other words how dare these folks break out of there perceived rut and try to better THEMSELVES and not include everyone in V.N. or even California, regardless of the others lack of interest and non-effort. That is just not a healthy situation for growth and independence.

Ken,
I cut and pasted this from
http://cbs2.com/local/Van.Nuys.Sherman.2.1056...

The area covered by the name change includes 1,800 residential homes, accounting for 8 percent of the residential dwellings in Van Nuys. It used to be called Sherman Oaks until postal officials gave it a Van Nuys ZIP code in 1961, according to city officials.

Its a stupid racist idea to change the name to an already established name. Get your own name.

Nice philosophy, but it just covers up self-interest and property values. LOL, you're not "bettering yourselves" by claiming another area's name and image.

Why not be honest and instead of claiming to be another neighborhood, instead give your area its own name, like "Valley Village" did, or "West Hills."

CBC - Why you so interested in a Van Nuys issue when you are in Hesperia? Kinda far to care one bit! or are you actually part of the "PartofShermanOaks" group?

I also remember somewhere that when Lake Balboa marched off from Van Nuys that their was ~18,000 people involved. Now the Lake Balboa area covers ~35,000 people.

I agree with LILLL, it is racist to change to an established community name. If it wasn't just about the money then they should of petitioned for a new name. North Sherman Oaks would of been good!

Ken,
I do not live in Van Nuys or even the Valley I did however graduate from VNHS in 75. My Dad and brother both own homes in the affected area.
As far as the name goes If you check this area was Sherman Oaks back in 61 so how is reviving your old name dishonest??

1961 is 48 years ago, why don't we just resurrect the Soviet Union while we are at it. Did your Dad and Brother buy when it was Sherman Oaks or Van Nuys. In all probability probably when it was VN. Thus, it was their choice to purchase in VN and have no rights to have their place renamed SO.-

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Scorpio

A loved one is extremely upset today, and you'll soon know all about it. Things are out of proportion, so a minor hitch becomes a huge drama that means you've got to drop everything in order to calm them down. Hey ho. At least it won't last long. If you're doing some last-minute Christmas shopping, you won't have as much patience as usual and nor will anyone else.
