Forest Service proposes changes to recreation sites

The U.S. Forest Service is examining recreation sites in the Bighorn National Forest after public meetings held this week to gather public input on the proposed changes, which involve the closure of some sites, but there are few changes slated for recreation sites near Lovell.

The five-year plan is designed to reduce deferred maintenance costs at the recreation sites and though it may cost some money up front, it will save the Forest Service money in the long run, Medicine Wheel/Paintrock District Ranger Dave Sisk said at Lovell's informative open house Monday. Weather slows spread of Bone Creek fire

“Today and tomorrow will really be the test”

Mother Nature and the coordinated efforts of more than 225 firefighters from across the United States have brought the Bone Creek fire in the Bighorn National Forest to 45 percent containment as of Tuesday evening.

Ignited by a lightning strike exactly one month ago today (Aug. 13), the fire has consumed 13,670 acres of the forest, threatened homes and public places, destroyed approximately 3,000 feet of guard rail and forced the closure of U.S. Highway 14 between Shell and Burgess Junction for better than two days.
