Connecticut Jobs Forecast, Jobless Report Differ

“That's not the path we want to be on”

Even as University of Connecticut economists are predicting that the state will lose 24,000 jobs over the next two years, the labor department reported Thursday that the state's unemployment rate fell sharply last month.

Connecticut's unemployment rate declined from 5.3 percent in March to 4.7 percent in April, dipping below the nation's unemployment rate for the first time in three months, according to the state Department of Labor's monthly report.

The state's job total remained flat in April, the Department of Labor report said. For the year, job losses totaled 7,200. Job gains, however, were still up 10,200 from April 2007. Read more

Automobile Dealers Prepare For Centennial Celebration

“There was no gradual growth of the business which could establish precedents and a trade etiquette; there was no long apprenticeship which could give a time honored position to any one man - any dean of the industry.”

Like many car dealers across the country, Papa's Dodge and the Mitchell Auto Group had humble starts.

In 1947, World War II veterans Dominic and Eugene Papa opened a two-bay garage in New Britain, where they made repairs and sold used cars. Beginning in 1949, the brothers sold new cars with now obscure names, including Crosley, Hudson, SIMCA and Sunbeam.

The Mitchell Auto Group story began in 1922 in Simsbury, where a young immigrant from Scotland opened a service garage in a barn.

'He repaired cars and shared the barn with Bessie the cow,' Robert Pringle's daughter, Mary Pringle Mitchell, wrote in a brief history. Robert Pringle's story would end sadly, but his family business would survive by embracing the early market for foreign cars. Read more

Royal Bank Of Scotland Building Rises In Stamford

“We're trying to be the employer of choice”

The woes of the financial services industry haven't interfered with The Royal Bank of Scotland's construction of a curvy, glass-and-terra cotta headquarters across Washington Boulevard from rival UBS, evident from I-95 and the MetroNorth line.

UBS, Switzerland's biggest bank, pioneered Stamford as a parallel universe to Wall Street in the mid-1990s, when it built a 13-story headquarters building on the east side of the street, just north of the MetroNorth rail station. UBS' building features a space the company calls 'the world's largest columnless' trading floor. Read more

Leaders: Noose incidents should be made public

“If the awareness is heightened, people know to respond to it immediately and hopefully it will be a deterrent.”

The only way to stop more noose incidents from occurring in Greenwich and other communities is to publicize those instances when it occurs and raise awareness, community leaders said.

'It should be made public so that it shows that this is something that the law enforcement agencies are going to pursue and there's going to be consequences,' said Winston Robinson, former president of the Greenwich branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Since October, nooses have been found throughout the state, including three at the Royal Bank of Scotland construction project in Stamford. Authorities, including Gov. M. Jodi Rell and U.S. Attorney Kevin O'Connor, have pledged to investigate the incidents and prosecute those responsible, including possibly charging them with a hate crime. Read more

“This was the use of a bias symbol, a bigoted symbol, so we're naturally concerned about it, but it doesn't appear to be part of an organized effort to racially intimidate people.”

Steelworker wants answers after noose discovery

“I have two kids and a wife. I'm up here providing for them.”

STAMFORD - A steelworker at the downtown Royal Bank of Scotland construction site said yesterday he found a noose at the site on two occasions last week and reported both incidents to his supervisors, who he claims did not stop the behavior or report it to authorities.

'I've worked from Rhode Island to Georgia, from Georgia to Chicago, and I never in my life have seen something like this,' said Taron Huckabee, 42, of Atlanta.

The steelworker was joined yesterday by state and local NAACP officials at a 2 p.m. news conference at the site. Read more
