'Age-in-place' house draws curious, bidders to auction
Buying a house is one of life's biggest decisions but it took Elmer Shaffer only 15 minutes Saturday to become a new homeowner.
Shaffer, 74, of North Whitehall Township, was the top bidder at an auction for a home in Schnecksville built by students at Lehigh Career and Technical Institute.
He got it for $344,000.
''Looks like you're stuck with me,'' Shaffer said, turning to one of his new neighbors.
More than 50 people showed up for the sale and took a tour of the one-story ''age in place'' home at 4825 Spruce St. before auctioneer John Pfeiffer opened the bidding at $350,000.

Student-Made Home is Accessible for Life a new house built for the long haul
This Saturday, another house will go up for sale, joining the nearly 1,500 already crowding the Lehigh Valley housing market.
The green ranch house at 4825 Spruce St. in Schnecksville has granite countertops, a spacious backyard and a fireplace.
But the sellers are hoping buyers will be more taken by its one-story design, extra-wide halls and easy-to-reach cabinets.
That's because the house, built by students at the Lehigh Career & Technical Institute, is an ''age in place'' home -- one that was specially designed with the elderly and handicapped in mind.
