Macroalgae blanketing Fire Island beaches endangers horseshoe crabs

Researchers at Molloy College said they have seen a mass die-off of horseshoe crab eggs and larvae on Fire Island this summer, after they were smothered by extreme amounts of macroalgae blanketing the area. The macroalgae -- basically ulva, or sea lettuce -- washed up on the beaches of Fire Island in late June, just after thousands of horseshoe crabs crawled up to lay their eggs there, said... Town of Islip to Hold Annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

September 10, 2014 - The Islip Town Board will remember the 13th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, during its annual remembrance ceremony to be held at the 9/11 monument, located at Veteran's Memorial Park., just west of Islip Town Hall, on Thursday, September 11th, at 5:00 pm. The Islip Town Board will be joined by fellow elected officials, area fire departments, local clergymen, civic leaders, local veterans groups and residents to pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Islip Town Honors Heroes Who Saved Sayville Toddler's Life

Islip Town officials honored several people Tuesday for their roles in saving the life of a Sayville toddler in July. Members of the Community Ambulance Company of Sayville, the Fifth Precinct of the Suffolk County Police Department and the Bayport Fire Department were each given an official Town of Islip Certificate of Recognition for helping to saving the life of then 18-month-old Lainey Metz, who was found unresponsive in a Sayville pool.
