Council drops land for Foster City charter school
The City Council decided late Monday not to continue reserving city-owned land for the proposed Magnolia Science Academy.
The Southern California-based Magnolia Educational & Research Foundation and supporters of the proposed academy wanted the council to keep four acres of a 15-acre property near the Government Center open for a public charter high school — an area that might otherwise become part of a larger residential and commercial project.
There are too many deficiencies for me," said Councilmember Linda Koelling.

San Mateo County school construction problems lead to guidelines
Local school leaders hope a new report by the San Mateo County Office of Education will help them avoid the kind of construction-related problems the San Mateo Union High School District has endured in recent years.
Typically, those of us in public education are not in the construction business," said Peter Burchyns, special-projects consultant for the office. "At least with the small districts, that's not the kind of thing we've been doing as part of our regular business all the time."

Something for everybody at Festa Italiana on Sunday
Stop the presses!
Parking will be hard to find in downtown San Mateo this upcoming Sunday; surely a staggering development to all who live and work in the area.
OK, so Second Avenue will be congested, like always. However, for once, there will be a worthwhile reason, as the 22nd annual Festa Italiana street fair once again returns to San Mateo, beginning at 10 a.m. and lasting until 6 p.m. One of the most popular annual events in San Mateo, the community street fair provides people of all ages the opportunity to shop for art and handmade goods in over 200 arts and crafts booths, sample Italian cuisine and barbecue, listen to live music from local bands such as The Refugees, San Franz and The Rodeo Clowns; and marvel at the annual chalk art gallery.
The Festa Foundation was established five years ago. The foundation was set up to support different Bay Area groups that support adults and children with developmental disabilities like autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and other neurological diseases. All proceeds will benefit the Festa Foundation and everyone working there will be a volunteer,” she said.
