Birder found Capistrano myth hard to swallow
I was minding my own business, reading a collection of Jack Smith newspaper columns, 1984's "Cats, Dogs, and Other Strangers at My Door," when Chapter 27 began with a surprise: a local angle. "Every March, for several years, I would receive a letter from Henry Childs, the birdman of Chaffey College," Smith wrote, "urging me, before it was too late, to expose the legend of the swallows of San Juan Capistrano as a fraud."
