Full story: SantaFeNewMexican.com

Most babies learn to talk by listening to their parents, and while Joe Lovato's first words were taught to him by his parents, no sound was involved.

This is a good story about a very good man. He was a favorite teacher of all the kids at Kearney. Mr. Lovato was my 6th grade teacher in 1977.
Thank you Mr. Lovato for all you have done for Santa Fe students.

I am the youngest of Joe Lovato's children. My father was a great teacher. My father is also a great Father and Grandfather. His kind ways and big heart are two of the many qualities that make him such a special person to so many. I am so happy that the New Mexican took time to recognize my father for his teaching career. I love him very much.

My father is indeed a man of great accomplishments and there is not enough room to state all he has done. Anytime we, his children, go with him and my mother anywhere, there are always people who stop him and say "Mr. Lovato, you were my favorite teacher in sixth grade! Remember when..." And they would reminisce about something he taught, or playing The Beatles in his classroom. My dad has kept his classroom pictures from all the years of teaching and will go back to refer to them after he has spoken to his student, and actually make a copy of the picture the class the student was in and send it to them.
My father is a man of great inspiration, and is very modest. He and my mother raised 9 boys and 2 girls, and his family was and is his priority. We come from a very close family and he has instilled how important it is for us to be there for each other, and to love one another. Needless-to-say, the holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, etc are always a house full!
There is so much about my father that I truly love, and I am very blessed and proud to be his daughter.

That's a great story. I appreciate it very much, coming from a long like of educators, including my uncle Pat Chavez of Raton, who was New Mexico Teacher of the Year 1973.

As an aside, the Dumb in the old name for the NMSD didn't mean stupid, it meant that they could not speak.

Its a truly wonderful thing to see someone get recognized and apreciated for what they do. I was inspired by the article and look forward to more of its kind. All too often our educators get taken for granted and don't get the recognition they deserve. Good job uncle Joe.
