County seat wars raged as pioneers moved westward
“A Civil War in Kansas, More bloodshed to be expected today.”
This is one in a series of vignettes celebrating Kansas history. The series' name comes from the state motto, Ad astra per aspera: 'To the stars through difficulties.'
As pioneer settlement in Kansas spread west, there were skirmishes, sometimes bloody and devious, over the establishment of county seats.
Kansas, already notorious as 'Bleeding Kansas,' nicknamed because of the violent territorial disputes over whether the state would be admitted to the union pro-slavery or anti-slavery, continued its reputation long after the Civil War. Read more
