The memory of the intense heat; the roar of the fire; the panic of knowing the clock is ticking - those flashbacks from last July when Runnells resident Toby Ames helped save the life of then 21-year-old Sarah Elrod of Prairie City still haunt him.

When a visitor approached the gate at Rover's Ranch Dog Park and Training Center in Runnells, the clientele gave him a noisy greeting.

Today, nearly two dozen individuals were recognized for performing a heroic act in an attempt to save someone's life, or unselfishly assisting others in an emergency situation.
