A man and woman are wanted for cashing several counterfeit check in the eastern Upper Peninsula.

For the second time in less than a month, a U.S. soldier with roots in the Michigan Soo has died in Afghanistan.

An update today on a check scam that appears to be spreading throughout Northern Michigan.

State Police say a couple is cashing fake checks throughout the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

She describes her nephew as a “hero.”

Kendra Griffin, a Petoskey resident and Wal-Mart optician, said she always knew her 24-year-old nephew, Sgt. Christopher T. Griffin, would join the Army.

“He was a Civil War buff — he liked to watch the History Channel,” she said. “He always wanted to be a soldier.”

But Kendra, and her sister, Kerri Causley, a Petoskey resident, department manager of cosmetics at Wal-Mart and Christopher’s mother, were not prepared for what would come next.

On Oct. 3, Christopher, a Kincheloe resident and 2004 graduate of Rudyard High School, died in combat in Afghanistan, along with seven other U.S. soldiers, when hundreds of insurgents, armed with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades, attacked their remote outpost near the Pakistan border, in what military officials are calling the deadliest assault against U.S. forces in more than one year. Lawmakers are expected to agree on all state budget bills by the end of today, putting the Legislature on track to meet a Sept.

Michigan State Rep. Gary McDowell, D-Rudyard, said today that the Michigan House-Senate Conference Committee , which is looking for ways to erase a $2.8 billion budget deficit for fiscal 2010, is considering imposing a 3 percent provider tax on more than 15,000 physicians who practice in the state.

While one state legislator wants to give local communities the power to ban smoking in bars and restaurants, Livingston County officials don't seems interested in it.

Local governments in Michigan should be able to prohibit smoking in restaurants and bars since a proposed statewide ban remains stalled in the Legislature, a lawmaker says.

Recent additions include Iron Mountain, Brimley, DeTour, Pickford, Rudyard, Rock Mid-Peninsula, Munising, and Powers-North Central.
