A DeRidder man died when the vehicle he was riding in became submerged in floodwaters Friday night following a traffic accident in Vernon Parish.

Winn Parish voters made a strong statement at the polls Saturday, and that statement was "no." A parishwide law enforcement 1-cent sales tax referendum failed, as did five proposals for alcohol sales in District 7. The sales tax received less than 30 percent of the vote, falling 2,309 to 950.

Billy N. Owens is the new alderman for the town of Rosepine. Owens, a Republican, tallied 99 of the 138 votes to outpace his opponent, James David Jones, with 72 percent of the vote.

ANGOLA -- The Louisiana State Penitentiary Museum Foundation will induct seven people, two posthumously, into the Louisiana Justice Hall of Fame in programs Friday at Angola and Baton Rouge.

Bond was set at $90,000 each for four men accused of stuffing a flashlight and a travel mug with explosives from stolen fireworks, and leaving the improvised bombs at churches.
