The announcement Wednesday of a $1.4 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is an important public demonstration of confidence in what Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have accomplished and the direction the system is headed. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg community should take note.

The money will be used to aid teachers and principals at the five lowest-performing high schools. It will provide data throughout the year to help them give customized help to academically struggling students. Read more
