Couple arrested for shoplifting | Independent Herald
A Harriman man and a Lake City woman were arrested Saturday afternoon after allegedly attempting to steal several items from Walmart in Oneida.
Gregory McCollum, 33, of Harriman, and his girlfriend, Dawn Samkas, 31, of a Lake City address, were arrested by Oneida Police Department Cpl. Ronnie Phillips Saturday afternoon.
According to arrest warrants filed by Cpl. Phillips, McCollum was allegedly observed by Walmart loss prevention personnel loading a flat-screen television into a cart and attempting to exit the store through the front entrance.
After a door greeter stopped McCollum, he allegedly went back into the store, where he met Samkas and took a shirt set from the mens department and left the store without paying for the item.
As McCollum was being placed under arrest, Samkas allegedly walked up to Cpl. Phillips and McCollum. When asked for identification, Samkas allegedly produced a driver license belonging to another woman. When questioned, Samkas allegedly told officers that the woman was her sister.
It was eventually determined that Samkas had purchased several items from the store, totaling $153.33, allegedly using a credit card stolen from the woman whose license she possessed.
As the investigation continued, OPD officers contacted Anderson County Sheriffs Department and learned that the woman whose license and credit card Samkas allegedly had possession of had reported her vehicle broken into the night before.
As officers were booking Samkas, they allegedly recovered credit cards belonging to three other victims, as well as marijuana and what appeared to be methamphetamine.
Samkas was charged with simple possession of marijuana, fraudulent use of credit or debit card, identity theft, theft under $500, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, three counts of theft, and providing false information to an officer.
McCollumm was charged with theft under $500 and possession of drug paraphernalia
