Local Richlands family hold historic family reunion

Direct descendents of George Washington & Celia Ann White Petteway met this past weekend to celebrate over one hundred and forty years of their family history.

George W. Petteway, in 1870, went to Richlands' town officials and organized with them a new school and church for Freed slaves and their children. The Edney school was formed ca.1870 and remained open until the late 1950s, serving the citizens of the Richlands and Catherine Lake area of Onslow County.

The original Primitive Baptist Church of the same name was severly damaged by a hurricane in the early 1960s. Edney School is still standing in its original location and is the remaining all African American school of the 19th Century still standing in Onslow County.

Over three hundred people participated throughout the day at the Petteway family reunion and all had a wonderful time transversing back through time, talking about their family heritage and history.
