Paublita Padilla Gutierrez, 85, a lifelong resident of Aragon, N.M., entered into eternal rest Monday, May 5, 2008, in Aragon.
A prayer vigil was at 6 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2008, led by Juan Aragon. A funeral mass was Saturday, May 17, at Santo Nino Church. The rite of committal and internment was at the Aragon Cemetery.
Paublita was born Jan. 26, 1923, in Aragon, to Lorenzo and Marcelina (Romero) Padilla. She was employed by the Senior Program and Goodwill Industries of New Mexico in Reserve, N.M.

Family Health Fair Draws A Good Crowd
The Family Health Fair in Reserve saw a good turnout in April. Every attendee of the health fair received a small gift when they signed in and door prizes were handed out every few minutes.
The soup kitchen collected canned goods donated by health fair participants and had some prizes for a raffle.
The whole community contributed tremendously with volunteer time, food donations, silent auction items, free incentives, door prizes and health professionals donating their time.

Catron County Sheriff's deputies were issued Tasers on May 8 after they completed training conducted by the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department.
The training included getting shot by a Taser, which sticks prongs into a suspect and gives that person an electric shock.
"I immediately felt the jolt. It was no fun," said Under-Sheriff Ian Fletcher.
Fletcher said the Tasers will serve as valuable tools when arresting non-compliant suspects.
"This will be a very effective compliance tool," deputy Jimmy Jaramillo said.

Reserve Principal Says School Year Was A Success
Cindy Shellhorn, principal of Reserve High School for nine years, said the school did very well academically as per the results of PSAT and ACT tests.
Shellhorn spoke highly of her staff and aides, saying they worked diligently to prepare and guide the students in their studies.
She has been teaching for 18 years, and as a resident of Glenwood, has made the daily commute without hesitation.
"I have seen these students though the years grow in their knowledge and maturity, and I find it deeply rewarding," Shellhorn said.

Mobile Home Fire Near Aragon Kills 85-Year-Old Woman
“The fire started on the porch. I can't really say for sure how it started”
An 85-year-old resident of the Aragon area died in a mobile home fire in the early morning hours of May 5. Paublita Gutierrez, a lifelong resident of the area, perished in the fire.
Cruzville, Apache Creek and Aragon volunteer fire chief Jim Wasserburger said the first call came in at 4:25 a.m.
Eleven firefighters responded and arrived at the scene within minutes after the call, Wasserburger said.
The mobile home was fully engulfed in flames at their arrival and it burned down to the frame. Firefighters immediately began to search for Gutierrez at the scene, resulting in her discovery among the ruins. Read more

Students Get Hands-On Experience
“Ranch Days has been an annual event for 10-plus years, and the many volunteers and organizations involved working as a team to make this an enjoyable experience is fully appreciated”
Ranch Days for Catron County students was at the McKeen ranch on April 23. The event was "an opportunity to instruct our students on the importance of agriculture in our daily lives," said Margie McKeen, who was host to about 360 students and parents.
The ranch is located about one mile north of Alma on Highway 180. Students from Reserve, Quemado, Datil, Mojave Academy, Montessori and Glenwood observed and participated in various ranch activities.
Doug Baird explained branding techniques, Judy and Kim O'Loughlin made butter, John Murphy and assistants gave roping instructions, Larry and Dean Foster made biscuits on a chuck wagon, Ernest Herrera demonstrated cotton ginning and Bob Shanks and Albert Flores gave a packing animal demonstration. Catron Senior Centers Cater To More Than 1,000 Members

On the corner of Ella and Ester streets in Reserve sits one of the most important buildings in the community. Within the walls of the Catron County Senior Citizen Center hums the lifeline for the village's elderly.
Dedicated staff and volunteers administer vital programs and services essential for the health and well-being of local seniors, who are identified by regulations as minimum age 60.
Nan Skelton is the executive director of the Catron County Commission on Aging. The non-profit commission is responsible for the administration of the senior centers throughout Catron County. Read more

House Fire
A structure fire occurred in Aragon on Sunday at the Mata residence. Within seven minutes of receiving the call, five volunteers from the Cruzville and Apache volunteer fire departments were on the scene and the Reserve Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene soon after.
Preliminary investigation as to the cause of the fire showed a recently-installed fireplace pipe may have been the source. Fire damage was limited to the roof.
An Aragon volunteer firefighter said people should make sure to have proper roof clearance and use triple-wall fireplace piping. Read more

Ruby Marcella Craig, 66, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2008, at her home in Datil, N.M. She was born Oct. 24, 1941, in Soper, Okla., to Cecil and Nellie (Revis) Stanley.

Reserve Woman Gets Statewide Honor
A Reserve woman is being honored by the New Mexico Commission on the Status of Women
Dona Baldwin of Reserve is among the 21 women from around the state who will be honored for their exceptional contributions to their community and state at 7 p.m. Friday, May 2, at the Hotel Albuquerque.
The NM Commission on the Status of Women and the Governor's Office hosts this prestigious event.

Reserve Photographer Is Always In Pursuit Of The Perfect Image
“I was driving into the Quemado Lake area when I spotted two male elk by the road”
Linda Aragon is demanding as a photographer in her pursuit of the perfect outdoor picture. Self-taught in her profession, she drives throughout Catron County in search of unique settings to capture with her lens.
"I have discovered many remote areas which display the colors of the rainbow," Aragon said. "I concentrate on wildlife and outdoor still life scenes."
Aragon has been involved with photography all her life, and since 2003 she has been exhibiting her work in shows throughout New Mexico. Read more
