If the sale of fireworks is illegal within the city limits of Renton, why are retailers such as Fred Meyer, Walmart, and RiteAid, among many others, still selling them? It's no wonder that we are still experiencing the illegal possession and use of fireworks within Renton because obviously people think if they are for sale in local stores it isn't illegal to use them here! When I called Renton Police to report fireworks violations, I was told there was little they could do to enforce the law, as they were receiving an average of 500 calls an hour related to fireworks complaints, and that there were only 10 officers available to handle them all. Small firecrackers and such are one thing, but when you have idiots shooting off M-80's and and even bigger explosives within 100 feet of your home, this is beyond scary! What is the solution here? Maybe the answer is to up the ante and impose harsher penalties for violators,(including businesses selling fireworks illegally), harsh enough to act as a strong deterent and make people think twice before selling and/or shooting off dangerous explosives and endangering themselves and their neighbors. I am a very patriotic person, but I have come to hate the 4th of July because of the illegal discharge of fireworks around my home.
