Student success in college depends more on the quality of classes taught in high school than the size of the district, according to an analysis of the academic performance of freshman students at the three state-run universities.
The analysis reported in a copyright story in the Des Moines Sunday Register indicated that students from small and medium schools were just as likely to be in the top 10 percent as the bottom 10 percent and the largest schools were more likely to fall in the bottom 10 percent of Iowa high schools, rather than in the top 10 percent.
