Elderly man dies in fire at Newton County home
<![CDATA[NEOSHO, Mo. (AP) -- Newton County authorities are trying to determine what caused a fire that killed an 86-year-old man. The fire early Wednesday at a home between Neosho and Racine killed William N. Benton. He lived at the home with his daughter-in-law and her two children, who all escaped without serious injuries. Fire officials say the fire had engulfed the house by the time firefighters arrived. Benton's body was recovered inside the house. The Joplin Globe reports the fire was so widespread and damage so extensive investigators could not determine where the blaze began or what ignited it. Newton County Coroner Mark Bridges says Benton likely died of smoke inhalation. ------ Information from: The Joplin (Mo.) Globe, http://www.joplinglobe.com
