La Llorona Sings And Wails In Catron County
The audience at Quemado's Senior Center Dinner Theatre was given a rare treat last Friday night.
The occasion was a performance of La Llorona, the Wailing Woman, preceded by a delicious lasagna, salad and cake dinner.
The performance was sponsored by Northern Catron County's Roadrunner Arts Council through the auspices of the New Mexico Humanities Council.
Rosalia de Aragon opened her Chautauqua performance dressed in black, wailing and singing in Spanish to recorded guitar music as she searched for her drowned children.

Roadrunner Arts In Catron Presents 'La Llorona'
On July 18, Northern Catron County's Roadrunner Arts Council is sponsoring Rosalia de Aragon in a Chautauqua performance of La Llorona, the Wailing Woman at Quemado's Senior Center.
The performance comes to Quemado through the auspices of the New Mexico Humanities Council. The performance, which is free, will start at 6 p.m. and will be preceded by a lasagna and salad dinner. Cost for the dinner is $6 and it will be served starting at 4:30 p.m.
Everyone is welcome.
La Llorona, who weeps and wails as she looks for her drowned children, has given New Mexicans the chills for centuries.

Quemado, Reserve Track Teams Set For State Meet Saturday
Quemado and Reserve will be sending some of their top athletes to the state Class A/2A track and field championships in Albuquerque on Friday and Saturday.
From Quemado, junior Thomas Roberts will compete in the 110-meter hurdles, while senior Tim Holecek will compete in the high jump, the discus and the shot put.
Quemado Lady Eagle junior Cassandra Legarreta will compete in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and the triple jump, while freshman Kalyn Crumbly will compete in the pole vault. Read more

Mary L. McKinley, 65, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at her home in Quemado, N.M. She was born Feb. 14, 1943 in Socorro, N.M., to Tom and Billie (Steele) Weathers.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby Ray McKinley, of their home in Quemado; son, Phil McKinley and wife, Tara, of Quemado; daughters: Leah Davis and husband, Mike, of Pie Town, N.M.; Sug Farrington and husband, Eddie, of Clayton, N.M.; and Missy Williams and husband, Ricky, of Quemado; brothers: Dean Weathers of Taos, N.M., and Robert Weathers of Pie Town; sisters: Lola Albin of Pie Town; Judy McKinley of Duncan, Ariz.; and Tommie Chavez of Quemado; grandchildren: Randa Hill, Chance Williams, Kyle Hill, Keylee Farrington, Morgan Williams, Garret Williams, Tray McKinley, Festus Farrington, Cole McKinley and Dally McKinley; and a great grandchild, Randin Gossett. Quemado Man Planning Convenience Store, Gas Station

Tommy Padilla, 55, stood beside his truck and horse trailer, observing the cars and trucks slowly moving along Highway 60 in Quemado on a warm spring morning.
"Did you know Highway 60 is actually a coast-to-coast roadway?" Padilla said.
Speaking in a measured, thoughtful tone, Padilla pointed out the construction activity on his 3/4-acre lot fronting Highway 60.
"This lot sits on the corner of California and Second Street. California is the name of Highway 60 through Quemado," he said. Read more

Students Get Hands-On Experience
“Ranch Days has been an annual event for 10-plus years, and the many volunteers and organizations involved working as a team to make this an enjoyable experience is fully appreciated”
Ranch Days for Catron County students was at the McKeen ranch on April 23. The event was "an opportunity to instruct our students on the importance of agriculture in our daily lives," said Margie McKeen, who was host to about 360 students and parents.
The ranch is located about one mile north of Alma on Highway 180. Students from Reserve, Quemado, Datil, Mojave Academy, Montessori and Glenwood observed and participated in various ranch activities.
Doug Baird explained branding techniques, Judy and Kim O'Loughlin made butter, John Murphy and assistants gave roping instructions, Larry and Dean Foster made biscuits on a chuck wagon, Ernest Herrera demonstrated cotton ginning and Bob Shanks and Albert Flores gave a packing animal demonstration. Catron Senior Centers Cater To More Than 1,000 Members
“We serve well-balanced, nutritional meals which meet federal guidelines”
On the corner of Ella and Ester streets in Reserve sits one of the most important buildings in the community. Within the walls of the Catron County Senior Citizen Center hums the lifeline for the village's elderly.
Dedicated staff and volunteers administer vital programs and services essential for the health and well-being of local seniors, who are identified by regulations as minimum age 60.
Nan Skelton is the executive director of the Catron County Commission on Aging. The non-profit commission is responsible for the administration of the senior centers throughout Catron County. Read more

“We needed 287 registered members to conduct business, but we only had 254 present”
The Socorro Electric Cooperative held its annual membership meeting Saturday, but there were not enough members registered to comprise a quorum, so the business part of the meeting could not be held.
Members and their families from around the two county area enjoyed a lunch of hotdogs, chips and cookies before the meeting got underway.
According to the co-op's Administrative Assistant, Eileen Latasa, the co-op's bylaws state that 3 percent of the membership was needed to fulfill a quorum at the annual meeting. Read more

On April 9, the Catron County Chamber of Commerce met at President Jose Andres Giron studio in Reserve.
Members Mary Rakestraw, Tana Clark, Jude Wasechek, Nichole and Arnold Lopez, Robert Newport, Henry Martinez and special guest LouAnn Hunt from Single Action Shooting Society met to discuss final preparations for the upcoming Elfego Baca festivities.
Many events are planned for May 23 to May 26. The unveiling is scheduled for11 a.m. May 24, but the complete schedule is not yet complete. Members are working diligently to ensure planned celebration is a memorable event. Giron can be reached at 533-6116. Read more
