“I believe that students think a lot more about their choices, what they're eating, how alcohol can affect their bodies, how drugs affect their bodies, when it's real for them”
Wendy Clark has been teaching for only five years, but her enthusiasm, creativity and energy have already attracted attention. The state recently named this Lincoln County teacher its Middle School Health Teacher of the Year.
Besides serving as health teacher at North Lincoln Middle (formerly Pumpkin Center Middle), Clark also serves as the school's golf coach and dance coach.
Clark's classes are a far cry from worksheet boredom. Kids start their classes with what Clark calls 'energizers' -- jumping jacks and the like -- to get their blood circulating and their brains revving. They strap on pedometers, take their pulses and stretch. Then they record how fast their hearts are pumping and how many steps they take. Read more
