City administrator Joe Hoffman and public works director Bill Cox gave the Preston City Council a flood update during the June 16 meeting. Hoffman said that flood information packets and surveys were distributed by four teams to the locations affected by the flood on Monday, June 8.

But that's exactly what Jennah Marzolf of Rochester did for her mother, Deneen Krohn of rural Lanesboro. And what Krohn had dreamed of - but thought impossible - was a trip to be in the Chicago studio audience for the taping of an "Oprah" show.

The idea started taking shape for Marzolf when she was about 8 or 9, and she asked both of her parents, "If you could go anywhere, or meet anyone, where or who would it be?"

"We are a chemical dependency outpatient program. We provide treatment to people suffering from alcohol and drug addictions, alcohol abuse and drug abuse," explained addictions recovery counselor Randy Hoffman, of newly-opened Wenden Recovery Services, at 124 Main St. in downtown Preston.

Wenden's new clinic was in the setup process for more than a year. Hoffman and intake coordinator Karyn Johnson spent that time investigating how important the clinic could be in Preston. Read more

The State of Minnesota's sesquicentennial banner arrived to a fitting reception at the Chatfield Public Library on April 11.

Officials on hand to receive the banner (in a photo seen in the last issue of the Chatfield News) were Chatfield Mayor Curt Sorenson, Vice Mayor/council member Brenda Johnson, library director Monica Erickson of Chatfield, and area sesquicentennial representative Greg Davids of Preston. Bringing the banner and presenting it were Mayor Jim Struzyk and library director Dianne Sikkink of Spring Valley, since it had been there the day before. Read more

The new Chatfield elementary school approved in a referendum last fall is being constructed in the area adjacent to Highway 30/74 on a hillside annexed to the east side of the city. Eventually, developer Geoff Griffin's plans call for over 300 homes reaching from that highway down the hill to Highway 52 on the south edge of Chatfield.

The complicated project involves what city, school and development officials have termed as infrastructure costs beyond what a developer is expected to handle in a typical development. The main reason is a 260-ft. elevation increase to get water and sewer up the hillside, along with a road that will pass through a steep area where little in the way of the standard assessments to homeowners can occur because the terrain is for the most part not buildable.
