Personnel decisions and other Pottsgrove School District employment matters recommended by Superintendent Shellie Feola were unanimously accepted Tuesday by the Board of School Directors, affecting 28 positions. They include: The earlier announced hiring of Dr. Maura Roberts of the Reading School District, to serve as director of pupil services succeeding Ann Myers, who retired, was unanimously authorized by directors.

In what might be considered an anticipated but much-delayed windfall, the Pottsgrove School District now hopes to see as much as $350,000 in revenue "rolling through its books" in coming weeks, Nester, its business administrator, said Tuesday . That's because the Pennsylvania Department of Education has agreed to begin making payments on its earlier promise to reimburse the district for a portion of the costs it incurred to re-build and expand Ringing Rocks Elementary School, it told Nester in a recently received letter.

George To Lead Montgomery County Intermediate Unit

Directors of the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, which provides a variety of services to the Pottsgrove, Pottstown, and Spring-Ford Area school districts, on Monday announced it selected Dr. John J. George as the unit's new executive director, effective Oct. 20. George, who since 2008 has served as executive director of the similar Berks County Intermediate Unit, succeeds Dr. Jerry Shiveley as MCIU chief. Shiveley retired in June .

A 74-year-old Gilbertsville man who Lower Pottsgrove police allege "became belligerent toward officers" while being questioned outside the Wine And Spirits Shoppe in the North End Shopping Center, 1300 N. Charlotte St. , was cited Saturday at about 8 p.m. on charges of public drunkenness and harassment. Store employees had refused to allow Bernard Wagner of Gilbertsville to make purchases there because they suspected he was intoxicated, according to a department press release.

Tuesday Case May Affect Local Schools' Charter Costs

A case due to come Tuesday before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court may affect how the Pottsgrove, Pottstown, Spring-Ford Area and other school districts statewide stop or slow the loss of their students and supporting revenue to charter schools. The lawsuit, which does not involve local districts directly, is being brought by the West Philadelphia Achievement Charter Elementary School against the Philadelphia School District.

A 13-acre parcel of vacant land at 3049 E. High St., just west of the Turkey Hill convenience store at Rupert Road, won unanimous preliminary approval Thursday night from the Lower Pottsgrove Board of Commissioners as the site for future construction of a shopping center to be called Sanatoga Marketplace. Commissioners know some specifics about the center: for example, the size of its buildings - a 102,939-square-foot commercial structure, and a separate 7,500-square-foot restaurant - and where parking will be.
