Sentencings in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court for Sept. 15, 2014
Angel Nicole Brown, 25, of Burr Oak Street, was sentenced to 68 days in jail, three years of probation and ordered to pay attorney fees and state fees for possession of less than 25 grams of a controlled substance as a third-time habitual offender in July in Kalamazoo. Shelton Capers, 35, of Monticello Avenue, was sentenced to 15 days in jail, four years of probation, entry into the Swift and Sure Sanctions Program and ordered to pay state fees for delivery/manufacture of less than 50 grams of a controlled substance in May in Portage.

Interviews of Portage city manager semifinalists will be critical, council members say
On paper, the five candidates for Portage city manager look good, Portage City Council members say, but the interviews this week will decide if one of them is the future administrative leader of the city. Slated for interviews Wednesday and Thursday are Paul Brake, Grand Blanc city manager; Mary Lou Brown, city administrator, Grand Island, Nebraska; Michael Hughes, Sturgis city manager; David Mackie, executive director of public services and deputy city manager, city of Taylor; and Laurence Shaffer, current acting city manager of Portage.

One injured in 2-car crash on South Westnedge, near Meijer in Portage
Portage Public Safety police and fire units responded to the accident at 6:56 a.m. in the 5100 block of South Westnedge Avenue, near Meijer, according to a news release. Police say a 23-year-old woman, driving a passenger car, was turning left into a private drive from northbound South Westnedge.

16-year-old girl turns in to path of train, suffers minor injuries
A teenager only suffered minor injuries on Wednesday morning, after she turned her car in to the path of an oncoming train, resulting in a crash. It happened at the intersection of Shaver Road and West Melody in Portage at around 7:00 a.m. Police say the train was headed south when it collided with a 16-year-old's 1997 Buick.

Tangie Bates, 49, of North Church Street, was sentenced to 45 days in jail, two years of probation and ordered to pay state fees and restitution for possession of less than 25 grams of a controlled substance in April 2011 in Kalamazoo. Gregory Keith Benjamin, 58, of East Alcott Street, was sentenced to eight years to 25 years in prison and ordered to pay state fees and restitution for assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder as a fourth-time habitual offender in June in Kalamazoo.
Campaign finance reports show Sean McCann maintains fundraising lead in 20th Senate District race

Motorcycle crash on US-131 in Portage caused by mechanical failure, police say
Portage Public Safety police and fire units responded to the crash at about 8:30 p.m. on US-131 near I-94, according to a news release. The motorcycle was northbound in the passing lane when it "experienced some type of mechanical failure," according to the release.
