West-side senior-living centers sold

“But Skilled Healthcare runs a very good operation (and the offer) fit in well with our plans and made sense for us to go ahead and sell.”

The former Sandpiper Bay Health & Retirement Center and its adjacent Waterfront Inn Assisted Living at Sandpiper Bay -- both near Central and I-235 -- have new owners.

Skilled Healthcare Group Inc., based in Foothill Ranch, Calif., announced Thursday that it had acquired the senior-living facilities for $13.2 million. The sale closed Tuesday.

The transaction included the real property and assets of the 152-bed skilled nursing facility and the 34-unit assisted-living facility.

'This area was chosen because of its great location and given that it is a good-sized community with strong health care support systems already in place,' Melody Chatelle, Skilled's spokeswoman, said in an e-mail. 'Also, Wichita is near Kansas City, where the company has strong support operations as well.' Read more

Details of union unrest at Argosy casino are unclear

“This has been building for a long time”

There's been no public sparring by the combatants in Saturday's vote that could unionize 200 dealers at the Argosy Casino Hotel & Spa in Riverside.

Jim Stoufer, president of United Auto Workers Local 249 in Pleasant Valley and active in the organizing effort, said he didn't think any Argosy employees were willing to go public with their grievances and risk possible reprisals.

Certainly none has come forward.

So what is this union fuss all about?

Argosy general manager Tom Burke said he had no idea. Read more
