What you are not understanding is that ALL of the buildings in the area sustained major damages. The only big hotel in the city was at Casino Magic. Also the Red Cross claims there are no approved shelters.

Thank you. I thought they said that hotels were up and running now. How current is your news from people who live down there? I notice that you are living in another state. Very interesting that the Red Cross finds nothing to approve....sad. Thanks again for trying to explain things.
the hotels aren't safe, they're on the water

Hi...I know the hotels on the water are not the safest...it would take a lot of courage to go into them...but surely the size of the building and getting to the back on the middle-level floors would be a safer shelter escape than staying in thinner constructed residential homes? A small house or worse yet, the tiny FEMA travel trailers, are no match for these larger storms.
Keep us posted, as able, on what you experience if Hurricane Felix tosses any winds your way. I just posted another Forum about the latest wind speed and size. It was not on the Bay Saint Louis, MS newswire yet so I could not post that actual article today. I have a feeling that a lot of people are not going to get warned properly due to the holiday and people being off work and away from news sources.
well, most of the hotels are waterfront and big tourist attractions, therefore, a LOT of windows and glass... so, it's hard to know what people are going to do- truth be told, in my opinion, there are NO safe places anywhere near previous Katrina or Rita paths because there's so little to act like a barrier... I'd leave if it was a cat.1 and Katrina is the only one I've EVER evacuated for...

Thanks, Crickette...it sounds like your area is now in the category of the Florida Keys...where it is common practice to evacuate before each major hurricane. A big hug to all of you with "no shelter" anywhere available. That is frightening.
I wonder if we can motivate the city to BUILD some type of FORTRESS down there for citizens? Priority to have shelter from all of these upcoming hurricanes.Question: were ANY of the older historical buildings left intact enough to be renovated for shelter usage? I saw photos recently of what they used to look like...very substantial, solidly built, large homes.
Hotel Reed, formerly a hotel in the 40's and then a nursing home, is a huge brick building and although I know it had water in it, I'm not sure how much structural damage occurred with it. I'm also not sure whether it would be considered an appropriate shelter, as it's right on the water....BNNC would know more about it than I

The Stennis Space Center in newly annewed Bay Saint Louis is a certified storm shelter. Hundreds of people stayed for days, during and after the storm. The building recieved no real damage.

Thereis also a place through all the coastal counties to be put on a list for evacuation. They will pick you and a pet up at your house and bring you to any of the dozens of shelter out of the storm path north of the coast. Calling your city would be the best way to find out or through SunHerlad.
The city of Bay Saint Louis is designing with plans to build a storm shelter/distribution center next to the train Depot which did not flood but is only a few blocks from the beach. This building would also serve as a community and cultural center. Oh and I am here in the bay not Kentucky.
