Oct. 24, 2006: Schuylkill miner killed in blast
A Schuylkill County coal miner who once said he drew strength from the danger of working underground was killed Monday in an explosion at a small shaft in the western end of the county where four miners were hurt in a 2004 blast.
It was Pennsylvania's first underground anthracite mine fatality in 71/2 years, officials said. Five other miners escaped injury.
Dale Russell Reightler, 43, of Donaldson, who had been a miner since his teens, died of massive chest and head injuries in the explosion, which happened at 10 a.m. about 2,300 feet underground at Buck Mountain Slope of R&D Coal Co. mine in Tremont Township, officials said.
