J&L Hardware, in the struggling community of Holden Heights, fronts the scruffy Orange Blossom Trail at Interstate 4. It isn't very noticeable and rarely holds sales. Yet J&L has lasted through more than five decades in the shadow of big-box and national-brand stores, thanks to a business model not in textbooks but relied on day after day.
