Members of the Piggott City Council were informed in a meeting Monday night that the first payment from FEMA on ice storm expenditures has been received.

LITTLE ROCK - Arkansas is putting its residents and economy at risk by failing to adopt a centralized system for flood-levee oversight, lawmakers have been told.

The Arkansas General Assembly should consider changing state law to give the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission more authority to ensure that levees are properly maintained to minimize flood danger, a state auditor told lawmakers Friday.

Throughout the just-completed school year, students at Piggott Elementary have enjoyed the benefits of a "Fresh Fruit and Vegetable" grant awarded by the Child Nutrition Department of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

John Harlan retired as the Piggott Fire Chief at the end of April, and was recognized for his many years of service by the Piggott City Council at their meeting last Tuesday.

A Kennett High School class of 2009 graduate was recently chosen as the first place winner for the Young at Art VII contest, held at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum in Piggott on May 8. The event is to celebrate the Paris wedding of Ernest Hemingway and Pauline Pfeiffer, from May 1927.
