'Lucky' man cheats death again by escaping burning house
William McAndrews Jr. is a lucky man.
Again.
Early Friday, the 23-year-old escaped a blazing fire that gutted the third floor of his family's Pennsburg home. And it wasn't the first instance of surviving despite the odds for McAndrews, who suffers from a hereditary kidney ailment.
''That's the second time he's cheated death,'' said William McAndrews Sr., who gave a kidney to his son to save him. ''You only have nine lives.''
A fire in the McAndrews' row house at 545 Main St. gutted the upstairs room where the son was staying, forcing him to leap from the window to the second-story awning about 2:30 a.m.

Director: Quakertown middle school principal was to be fired
The principal of a Quakertown Community School District middle school has retired midyear, in a decision that came as administrators prepared to fire him, a school board member said Friday.
Richard A. Zinck, 54, who headed Richard E. Strayer Middle School in Richland Township for 19 years, announced he was leaving at a school assembly held March 19.
He has been replaced in the interim by Cindy Lapinski, one of two assistant principals at the school.
''We know that he resigned, and if he wouldn't resign he'd have been terminated,'' said Paul Stepanoff, a Quakertown school board member. ''We have to trust the administration that whatever happened rose to the level that they needed to fire him.'' Read more
