Stu's notes:
"I went to the Teen Center dances in the basement of our Veterans Hall. One night on 1959 a nice policeman, Rodger Mills, said, "George (Day), take Stu home." Then it was Oly's fault. Looking back on those teen years I think it is sad what the kids are exposed to now. I'm glad that alcohol was all we had." Correction: During the 1950's Oroville Teen Center dances were held in the Veterans Hall main auditorium and NOT "in the basement". Also if you graduated from Oroville High in 1958, you should not have been allowed to attend a teen center dance in 1959. Once one graduated from high school their Teen Center days were over. That was the rule and Mrs Davis, the Teen Center Director, and Oroville Police Officer Ralph Thompson, the Teen Center Chaperon, saw to it that the rules were strictly enforced. In fairness it should be noted (no pun intended) that the excessive use of alcohol (incuding Oly) can destroy the brain cells that control one's memory. |
