'Murdered,' she wrote, Bucks prosecutors say
An entry in Mary Jane Fonder's pocket calendar suggests she knew Rhonda Smith was murdered in a Bucks County church before authorities made that public, investigators say.
Prosecutors say the calendar has ''Rhonda'' and ''murdered'' written under Jan. 23, the date Smith was found shot inside Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Springfield Township. They call it a key piece of evidence against Fonder, who allegedly was infatuated with the pastor and killed Smith out of jealousy.
District Judge M. Kay Dubree ruled Friday after a preliminary hearing in Ottsville that prosecutors have enough evidence to try Fonder on a first-degree murder charge in county court. Read more

Woman's arrest no surprise to some
“It was an unforgivable thing and it blew our family apart”
Former Springfield Township Police Chief Robert Bell was hardly shocked by Mary Jane Fonder's arrest Tuesday in the January murder of Rhonda Smith at a Bucks County church.
Bell became well acquainted with Fonder after the mysterious 1993 disappearance of her father and recalls her being ''agitated'' during his department's intense probe of that case. Fonder, now 65, accused police of harassment and wrongly treating her as a suspect.
Police never determined what happened to Edward F. Fonder III, an 80-year-old retired machinist, in a case that went cold years ago. Read more
