Tricky pick: Our 'greenest' president was . . .

“No president since or before, except maybe Teddy Roosevelt, has been willing to put as much political muscle into the environment.”

In honor of Earth Day , I devote this column to America's greatest environmentalist. via El Sentinel

Please explain to me how this "environmentally conscience" crap really works. To disingenuously promote green policies domestically, while we consume and purchase the majority of our goods overseas, with abysmal and rapacious tactics, methods, who is the hypocrite?

If consumers really cared, it would be reflected in their consumption. Bottom line. Right now we cannot get enough cheap goods from China and who knows where else, no matter what the cost.

But lets have Orange country continue with their "Green Initiative....." lol

Green men and women need to be congraulated in today's time for bold stands of anykind. It continues to take political will to stop projects and habits detrimental to our Earth. I can name on one hand the greenies of political will in this state and that is pitiful. Lets ramp it up and go for two hands this year as a resolution for Earth Day.

I guess the moral of this story is, right or wrong, in politics it isn't about finding a good and honest person. You won't.

They're all monsters, to one degree or another- and what else would we expect, when we demand of them a level of false perfection, fake optimism, and utterly invasive public visibility that nobody, NOBODY without a near-psychotic drive for power would be willing to give us?

In politics, it's about finding a monster who is on your side.

"Liberals say"

Did you really write that Mike? Nothing like using a broad brush to try and sound evenhanded.

It would be a mark of basic honesty to mention that there was such a thing as a (Democratic)Congress with a contribution or two (like maybe drafting and passing the bills?)regarding this environmental legislative history. might even be a thing or two to say about the popular pressure Nixon was trying to get out ahead of.

No, instead the story is that Dick Nixon was 'greener than Gore'. What a stupid point to go out of your way to make.

"Liberals say all this was a cold, political calculation designed to exploit the growing environmental movement."

Liberals started the movement not Nixon you idiot...Nixon jumped on the band wagon after it got moving regardless of his motivation.

Conservatives have jumped off the bandwagon...we've seen that in this era of big consumption, big oil, big homes, big Hummers and oversized SUVs because of people like you (conservatives...which is another work for exploiters of the environment).

"Liberals say"...do they Mike? Nobody else says it? And since "the liberals" say it, it has no validity? I've heard of people with I Miss Nixon stickers on their bumpers, but do they actually wish this guy was still president? Or are they saying that things are so bad now that having a corrupt power-hungry psychotic for a president doesn't seem so terrible.(Then again, that's pretty close to what we have now.) The slogan is a joke Mike - and so is your premise. If you would have left out the "liberal" tag because you were pandering to the right wing-nuts in Florida, the article would have been much more objective, and as such, believable. Then "liberals" might actually be willing to give the guy some credit.

Hey "Al" - go visit the Eskimo villages in Alaska that have been inundated by rising ocean levels - villages that existed for hundreds of years until recently. Or take a gander at photos that plainly show glaciers and sea ice disappearing at ever-increasing rates over the past few years. That is, if you can take your head out of the sand long enough to look. And by the sand, I mean your ... "Nothing exists as long as we refuse to believe it." Good motto moron! Why don't you apply that logic to the national deficit and make it go away too? And the same goes for Iraq. "Whatever daddy president tells me I believe it - he would never lie to me." Keep parroting those right-wing talk show hosts and don't come up with any conclusions of your own. That's the Republican way.

For those who object to use of the word "liberals,'' I could have substituted "Nixon haters.''
But every Nixon hater I've ever met is a liberal. And every critique of his environmental record I've ever seen comes from a liberal.
On another comment, the last thing I am is "even-handed.''
I write an opinion column. Those who read it must be amused at the notion I'm accused of being a right winger.
Cheers, and thanks for posting!

Karen, this article is right wing propaganda and spin designed to give the false impression that conservatives are environmentalists too (they're not, they're more like wannabes)...don't forget, this guy is just some right wing hack giving lip service to environmentalism in a column published by a local fish wrapper...

Now, let me turn back to the section I came on this website to read and check out yesterday's box scores....

Dan is a typical, "you're a free-market capitalist therefore an enemy of the environment" kook-fringe, conservative hating liberal.

As for the greenest president - Nixon was definitely a good choice, but not the greenest. Nixon enacted a vast amount of regulatory reforms - which are important. But, you also to prevent land from being developed in the first place. Another great Republican, Teddy Roosevelt, was the greenest. He was the father of the US Fish & Wildlife Service's National Wildlife Refuge System, father of the US Forest Service, and responsible for helping to preserve hundreds of MILLIONS of acres of land.

Let's not forget who recently created the largest marine sanctuary in the world...

Who cares? The Greening of America is a liberal media created expensive concept that has very little influence on the environment. The writer is out of touch with reality and has nothing better to write about. Because it is a hot media topic, the OS puts in on the front page.

Well, most people who think the president shouldn't lie and consider themselves above the law hate Nixon...and Bush. I would hope any republican feels the same.

However, I don't know why either, but Mike is pretty much right about his environmental achivements. OF course, Teddy Roosevelt was another great republican conservationist. Why did republicans abandon this concern and care for the earth and our environment?

Mike, doesn't matter what you write, you'll always be a pawn of either party as far as the simple minded are concerned.

However can you really say that you've never met 'conservatives' that dislike, if not hate, Nixon and/or some of the things he did?

Liberals started the movement? Hmmm...not sure about that one. Before there were hippies, there was Teddy Roosevelt. Conservatives are more conservation-minded, they just don't brag about it like liberals do.
