Most people think of tattoos as a modern phenomenon. But according to new book, Bodies of Subversion: A Secret History of Women and Tattoos, the so-called tramp stamp has a much longer history than we realise.

Olive Oatman, 1858. She was the first tattooed white woman in the U.S. After her family was killed by Yavapais Indians, on a trip West in the eighteen-fifties, she was adopted and raised by Mohave Indians, who gave her a traditional tribal tattoo.

One special town to explore on this historic road is the ghost town of Oatman, Arizona.

A section of Route 66 between Golden Shores, Ariz., and Oatman, Ariz., remains closed after weekend storms washed debris onto the roadway and damaged it, reported the Mohave Daily News .
