75 percent of Broward County schools earn A's or B's on Florida student progress report
Coral Glades High School was largely empty Tuesday, with students and teachers off until August, but that didn't stop the gathered few summer staff from celebrating the school's first A in the state's student progress report. 'It's me, my office manager, the data processor and the custodians,' said Coral Glades Principal David Jones, whose school received a C last year. 'But I can make a lot of noise.' Jones' victory dance was one repeated in several Broward County schools on Tuesday. The Coral Springs high school is one of 14 Broward public schools to jump two letter grades for the 2007-08 school year, according to school grades released Tuesday by the Florida Department of Education.

Broken pipe leaves big bill in North Lauderdale
A broken pipe that since April turned a neighborhood street into a sodden mess has finally been fixed, but officials and residents are still locked in a decade-long fight over who's responsible for the bill. The city replaced the rusted galvanized pipe with PVC last week, but the road in the Highland Court community is riddled with potholes so wide residents say their car suspensions are shot. Permanent repairs to the road and pipes could cost up to $500,000. 'The city thinks [the problem] will all go away if the leak is fixed, but they haven't decided who's responsible,' said resident Andrea Kennedy, who has lived in Highland Court for six years.
