Police said the driver, a North Haven resident whose name was not released, left a driveway on Taft Street, drove across the lawn of the Blessed Sacrament Church, and hit shrubs, a fence and finally a street light pole. The crash was at the corner of Circular Avenue and Church Street at about 2:47 p.m.
Police said the man, who was alone in the car, was found unresponsive when they arrived. He was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the Hamden Police Department at (203) 230-4030.

Cromwell Police To Begin Using Heart Defibrillators
Police cruisers in town are now stocked with one more piece of equipment: automated external defibrillators, or AEDs.
The portable devices are used to shock a heart back into its normal rhythm if a person goes into sudden cardiac arrest. The police department purchased nine AEDs and trained 23 of its officers to use them, Capt. Roy Nelson said. Eight of the devices are in police cruisers, and the ninth will remain at police headquarters.
While every uniformed officer is trained to operate AEDs through medical response technician training, Nelson said department members received additional training specific to the DefibTech units purchased from Survival Group in North Haven.
Blades like these may soon be spinning on New Haven shores, according to a proposal to be introduced Monday to city lawmakers.

East Hampton Water Treatment Upgrade To Begin
In a cool crypt beneath Center School, Vincent Susco checks pressure readers and condensation-covered water tanks and pipes.
The tanks sit on wet concrete in the tight basement laboratory that Susco, the administrator for the town's water pollution control authority, calls his playground. Constant trickling sounds as water pours from a pipe into the first of three filtering stations.
This is the hub of the Village Center water system - an inefficient treatment plant for some of the town's contaminated water.

Middletown Takes Closer Look At Magnet School Partnership
- For city students with a technological or scientific bent, Thomas Edison Middle School has been a place that pledges an education a step above the norm, with a laptop for every student.
But in a year of changes for the Middletown school system, the board of education is now re-evaluating the district's seven-year partnership with the Meriden-based magnet school.
Some board members, citing relative parity between Middletown's test scores and Thomas Edison's, have questioned how much of a benefit the district reaps by paying about $672,000 annually for 120 Middletown students to attend Thomas Edison, which serves grades six through eight.

In-State Firms Gain Advantage In Bidding Wars
It's now an eye for an eye between in-state and some out-of-state companies when it comes to bidding for Connecticut state contracts.
New legislation signed last week by Gov. M. Jodi Rell gives an advantage to Connecticut companies competing for state contracts - but only if they are competing against companies from states that have preferential bidding rules.
Proponents of the legislation, such as Senate President Pro Tem Donald Williams, D-Brooklyn, argued that its passage would help the Connecticut economy.
