Billerica power-plant developer seeks Concord River water

“Homeowners will benefit from a new toilet fixture and will save on both water and sewer bills annually”

The developer of a power plant proposed for North Billerica wants to purchase 40 million gallons of water from the Concord River each year to control pollution and cool the plant's turbines. via Lowell Sun

As I drove through Billerica on Wednesday, May 7th I noticed posted signs stating Billerica is already on a Mandatory Stage II Water Band.

With them using that ammount of water and Billerica is already on a water ban, don't you think the river will be very very low by July and if we get a heat wave then there will be more issues. I think we should start taking care of the river with the trash and the muddy looking water before we start thinking Power Plant.

I find it funny that all of a sudden the same residents who polluted the Concord river all these years are now so concerned for it

There are more suitable places to build these plants that are not so close to residents. This would cost the plant more money and they will only make like 80 million a year now to begin with so they would not want to spend more. Please!!! This is the wrong place.

Exactly! The proponents in their greed are only thinking of what's the "easiest option" for them to build and then they'll be long gone and no longer liable for ANYTHING. The residents will be the ones to have to live with the aftermath. Even one of their own consultants who lives in Tewksbury in close proximity to the site is selling his house!

It seems that Billerica is in need of a cash influx to take care of their water issues.
I wonder where a town with very little business could get money?
It seems Billerica has many issues with their budget like most towns in Massachusetts yet most residents in towns with failing economies vote against new business.
When Billerica's water infrastructure fails I wonder how much the taxes will increase?
If only there was a way to reduce pollution by installing a new state of the art plant, decomissioning older heavy oil fired plants and have someone pay for our aging water system problems.
That is right Billerica you can make a difference by reducing pollution in new england and benefit from a cash influx by installing a plant near a rendering plant, junk yard and main gas line on very undesireable land that nobody has wanted to purchase since the early days of raytheon.
This area is a blight as it stands. How is Billerica proud of this wasteland enterance into a nice town?
Vote to have that plant built, It will be clean, well maintained, and the area will have a cash influx for that terrible gateway into your town.
I still can't believe that most are complaing about placing a gas turbine plant in the smelliest area of Billerica "Rendering" and most polluted "Junk Yard" and unsightly area "Abandoned Raytheon".
Good luck

You guys really are the least intelligent people I have ever seen. You are a bunch of scripted clones. When Interstate Electric gets the work lets see who is Mr. Fistzpatrick's bitch then. I like the guy at the Billerica meeting that was a union member that worked at power plants for years and never had any issues.(well other than his severe emphysema that he had). When you have something to say (from your brain) please post again.

Does this sound like a town ready to give up 40,000 gallons of water to a power plant:
"Water used for lawns and landscapes is the greatest contributor
to increased water consumption during the summer months.
This increased demand can threaten public safety, environmental
resources, and the quality of drinking water. In the most extreme
cases, the high water use can threaten the ability of municipalities
to store water for water pressure and fire protection purposes.
Moreover, water suppliers risk violating authorized water withdrawal
volumes established under the Water Management Act."
