Several inches of mud is all the Cedar River left behind after it took back the water that devastated homes in rural Atalissa, Hinkeyville and rural Nichols.

Last week, the West Liberty Index called for readers to donate any items they could spare for local flood victims.

Though the Cedar River has crested, it has left a path of destruction in its wake.

The Beginning As the waters continued to rise, surpassing records set in the floods of 1993, Atalissa, Nichols and West Liberty residents braced themselves for an unprecedented time in history.

People had their hearts in the right place, Muscatine County farmer Louis Broders said, but they didn't use their brains.

The annual Nichols alumni banquet will be June 14 at the West Liberty Country Club.

Cody A. Geertz, 19, of Nichols, died Sunday, May 18, 2008, at his home. Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the West Liberty Community Center, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
