Pawnshop bill sent to House

“We're there to help them get started in the morning, get their prescriptions filled, get to their jobs, get gas money, whatever.”

As an economic recession forces some Kentuckians to scramble for cash, lawmakers are poised to help pawnbrokers sell the items hocked for 30-day loans.

The House Banking and Insurance Committee on Wednesday approved Senate Bill 195, which would cut the length of time pawnbrokers must hold items prior to selling them from 120 to 90 days, if loans are not repaid.

The bill's sponsor, Sen. Tom Buford, R-Nicholasville, did not attend the hearing, so lobbyist Russ Woodward, representing pawnbroker Cash America International Inc., stepped in to present the bill to the panel. Read more

Jessamine Medical Center expansion on track

“We felt the need for our patients to not have to make those travels and trips. ... We take care of them there, and they don't have to fight the Nicholasville Road traffic.”

An expansion of Lexington Clinic's Jessamine Medical Center, which will include new services, should be finished by early summer.

'We're determined to be finished by the end of June,' said Dr. Andrew Henderson, CEO of Lexington Clinic, the group practice with 200 providers in 30 specialties throughout Central Kentucky.

The current clinic building at 110 Village Parkway has 15,000 square feet. The expansion, which began in late fall, will add 10,000 square feet, Henderson said.

The Nicholasville clinic offers lab and radiology services, mammography, neurology, urology and gastroenterology. The multimillion-dollar expansion will add space for new MRI, CT and ultrasound capabilities, plus vascular surgery. Read more

House GOP tries to call up pre-abortion ultrasound bill

“We will begin hearing Senate bills next week”

House Republicans, fresh off their frustration over what they considered snubs in the budget, tried to force House Democratic leaders to call up a Senate bill that would require a woman to have an ultrasound before having an abortion.

Rep. Joe Fischer, R-Fort Thomas, tried to use a procedural measure called a discharge petition -- signed Wednesday night by more than 20 others -- to try to pry the bill from the House Judiciary Committee where it has been sitting since Feb. 12.

But the measure, which requires 51 votes to pass, got 40 votes. Sixteen lawmakers voted against the measure. Read more
