Dufford to receive Governor's Award

Dr. William E. Dufford will receive a Governor's Awards in Humanities along with two others at a luncheon Oct. 23 at the Columbia Hilton Convention Center Hotel. Other recipients include Dr. Tom Mack, professor and long-time chair of the English Department at the University of South Carolina-Aiken, and Dr. Alexandra Rowe, director of English Programs for Internationals at the University of South Carolina since 1989.

Woman charged with assaulting officer

Pauline Mcgraw, 55, of Newberry was charged Sept. 3 with disorderly conduct and assaulting a police officer while resisting arrest after she refused to leave the restroom at a local fast-food restaurant, according to the Newberry Police Department.

Remorse and thoughts of support have been expressed throughout the day across South Carolina following the fatal shooting of a Charleston County deputy "Law enforcement is a pretty close knit community in South Carolina," Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said, "especially with Charleston County. City council OKs hiring of utility consultant

William and Mary Ann Cross were recognized Tuesday night by Newberry City Council for their home being placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Crosses notified Mayor Foster Senn that they had received a letter from the Deputy State Historic Preservation Office on Aug. 8 that their home was now listed on the register.
