Ollie Otter visits Dyersburg to promote safety campaign
ABOVE:On Tuesday, Sept. 23, state and local officials were at the Dyersburg I-155 Welcome Center to kick off the National Child Passenger Safety Week with Ollie Otter.
Mid-South Toys for Tots Motorcycle Rally
Two west Tennessee area motorcycle enthusiasts were discussing all the underprivileged children in the area that might face a bleak Christmas with the current state of the economy. Nathan Talley of Eaton, and Lenny Stover of Newbern, decided to try to make a difference for those children this year. They solicited the help of a friend, Brian Stafford of Tatumville. An email to the Marine Corps Reserve Center in Memphis was all it took to launch them upon a mission of kindness.
On Saturday, October 25th, 2008, the first annual Mid-South Toys for Tots Motorcycle Run and Parade will be held at the “round-house” at Reelfoot Lake State Park near Tiptonville, Tennessee. The event site is located on Tennessee Highway 21 approx. 4 miles east of the Tiptonville city limits. Every motorcycle rider and every passenger participating is required to bring at least one new, unwrapped toy for donation to the United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. Members of the Marine Corps will be at the event to receive the toys, which will be distributed to needy children in the area for Christmas. All bikes are welcome.
Registration will begin at 11:00 AM. The motorcycle parade will begin at 1:00 PM, escorted by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. Following the parade, the local musical group “Funky Finger” will donate their services to entertain the participants. Sandwiches and soft drinks will be available for purchase at the event. The event will end at approx. 5:00 PM.
Each participant making a $5.00 cash donation to the Toys for Tots program at the event will receive a commemorative lapel pin and two chances to win door prizes donated by area manufacturers and businesses, including a power washer donated by Briggs and Stratton Power Products of Newbern, Tennessee.
This event is officially sanctioned by the United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.
This is an opportunity for motorcycle enthusiasts to show that “bikers” care for kids. All mid-south motorcycle riders are urged to attend.
If the turnout for this event is large enough, Talley, Stover and Stafford have pledged to make this an annual event.www.stategazette.com | PatrolCmdr
