New Ulm Volunteer Fire Department Members elect new Fire Chief
On May 20th, the membership of the New Ulm Fire Department elected a new fire chief for the volunteer fire department. The vote was 23-20 to replace Floyd Tonn with Keenan Hale.
Mr.Tonn has been a member of the department since 1962 and has served as chief for 20 years. Mr. Hale has lived in the New Ulm area for about six years and has beena member of the department since he moved here. He is also a member of the Cat Spring VFD.
Members also elected Donald Brokmeyer as President, Ed Rice as 1st Vice President, Henry Foerster Jr. as 2nd Vice President, Douglas Luedke as 2nd Assistant Chief, and Brenda Tonn as secretary-treasurer.N.U. Lions Club seeks scholarship applications
The New Ulm Lions Club Scholarship Award is open to any full time sophomore, junior or senior college student with at least a 2.5 G.P.A.
Applications will be accepted from students attending junior college, four year college, graduate school and/or accredited technical school. Scholarship applications may be picked up from Schulz General Store, Industry State Bank - New Ulm, or New Ulm Enterprise.
Applicants must be a resident of 78931, 78933, 78944, or 78950 zip code areas. Completed applications must be mailed to the New Ulm Lions Club, P.O. Box 242, New Ulm, TX 78950 postmarked no later than June 13, 2008. No late or incomplete applications will be accepted.Austin County adopts letter to TXDOT opposing Corridor
Austin County Commissioners adopted a letter of opposition to Trans Texas Corridor when they met Monday March 10th. The letter outlines the parks and managed lands, wetlands, archeological and historical resources and socio-economic characteristics of Austin County.
The letter concludes, "This Court recognizes the need for a 20 year plus transportation plan. It does not support a total destruction of our Texas land to build a financial empire for campaign contributors or lobbyists. This great State has grown and thrives on the wisdom and prudence of past government leaders. We imnplore our current State leadership to excercise that same wisdom and selflessness.New Ulm Lions Club Champagne Extravaganza
The New Ulm Lions Club Chambpagne Extravaganza will be held on Saturday, March 15 at Industry Firemen's Hall. This year's theme is Las Vegas Nights and tickets are $100 per couple.
Tickets are available at Schulz General Store, both branches of Industry State Bank, or from any Lions club member. A 2008 chevrolet pickup truck will be given away during the evening.
A wide selection of hors d'oeurves and champagne, along with casina games, a silent auction and dancing to the mnusic of the Gary Henneke Orchestra. Attire is formal/semi-formal. Doors open at 7:30pm and the Extravaganza begins at 8pm.
Vicky Denyer is serving as parade chairman. Lew Ellyn Gross is in charge of music.

NUWSC sets Annual Meeting FEB 19
The New Ulm Water Supply Corporation will hold its annual Stockholders Meeting on Tuesday, Feb 19 at the Lions Club Community Service Building. Four names are on the ballot for two board positions serving three-year terms. They are: Charles Marshall, Zach Sayre, Larry Cernoch, and Steven McBride.
Cernock is maintenance supervisor for Cameron Co. and previously served for one year on the NUWSC Advisory Committee.
Marshall is the current board secretary and retired from the Chevron Co. McBride is the onwer of Austin County Custom Truck Co. in Sealy.
Sayre, now serving as vice president, owns Iron Dog Harley Davidson Mnotorcycles in New Ulm.
Kenneth Jones Named Citizen of the Year

The New Ulm Chamber of Commerce honored Kenneth Jones as Citizen of the Year at its annual Awards Banquet Saturday evening, January 26th. Kenneth, was was completely suprised by the honor, was asked to give the Invocation and Benediction for the event, not knowing he was to be the guest of honor.
Kenneth is the deacon at St. Paul's Missionary Baptist church in New Ulm. He is currently serving on the committee for the restoration and remodeling of this 114-year old church. Kenneth is also the caretaker of Pope Cemetery in New Ulm, which was named for his ancestors going back as far as a great grandmother. After working in Bellville at a furniture factor, Kenneth decided to go into business for himself. In 1980, he opened KJ Uphostery A& Supplies. Over the past 28 years, he and his wife Wilma have upholstered and restored many pieces of furniture.
Kenneth has served as a board member for the New Ulm Water Supply and is currently the New Ulm Assistant Fire Chief.
Benefit & Blood Drive for Supaks after Fiery Accident
A benefit dinner, raffle and bake sale will be held for Donald and Joshua Shupak of Magnolia, who were critically burned in an accident on Nov. 18th.
The "Benefit to Go Plate Dinner, Raffle & Bake Sale will be held on Sunday, Jan 13 from 11 am - 2 pm at J&J Pavilion in New Ulm. Donald is a native of this area and is the brother of Johnnie Shupak, owner of J&J Pavilion. Joshua is in the 5th grade.

The New Ulm Chamber of Commerce is hosting a neighborhood holiday party on Monday, December 17th from 7-9pm at the Texas Star Cafe and EVERYONE'S INVITED!
Activities will include a hay ride, photos with Santa, cookies and candy for kids, Christmas Carols, and the announcement of the Christmas Lighting Contest winners.
The menu will include hot and cold appetizers, dips and chips, delectable desserts, punch for the kids, iced tea, coffee, and spiced hot wine.
Those attending are asked to contribute $5 per adult and $3 for children 7-12. Kids 1-6 are free.
Tom Johnson 2008 President of SCBR Board
The South Central Board of Realtors has announced that Tom Johnson of New Ulm has been installed as board president for 2008.
Johnson is a realtor and broker associate with Bill Johnson and Associates Real Estate. The SCBR serves the needs of over 400 members encompassing Austin, Colorado, Fayette, Lee, and Washington counties.
