Woman dies in carriage accident

A 74-year-old Lexington woman who was thrown from a horse-drawn carriage Friday afternoon died on Saturday.

Elizabeth Lampton, one of the owners of Elmendorf Farm, was pronounced dead about 2:45 p.m.

On Friday, four people were riding in a carriage at Elmendorf Farm on Paris Pike about 3 p.m. when the horse pulling the carriage got spooked, slamming the carriage into a small tree and through a fence, police said. All four passengers were ejected from the carriage.

Lampton received severe injuries and was transported to University of Kentucky Hospital. Another woman had a broken leg. Two other passengers were uninjured, police said. Elizabeth and her husband, Dinwiddie Lampton Jr., have owned Elmendorf Farm since 1997. Read more

DUI crackdown nets more drug violations

Easter egg hunts usually are fun affairs, but the Kentucky State Police version meant trouble for some allegedly impaired drivers.

'Operation Egg Hunt' was a Saturday night crackdown on driving under the influence in Pike, Laurel and Muhlenberg counties. Police say violations have been especially high in those aeas.

Highway checkpoints with troopers, canine units and drug recognition specialists produced 108 citations with twenty-four arrests.

Fourteen arrests were for driving under the influence of drugs, six for driving under the influence of alcohol. Read more

Kentucky farmers, still suffering the effects of last year's bad weather, will get $8.15 million in help under a new state program.

Gov. Steve Beshear, Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer and state lawmakers announced the Kentucky Agricultural Relief Effort on Thursday to help farmers recover from the severe freeze in April, followed by four months of severe drought.

'Farming is always a challenging occupation. Some years are more challenging than others; 2007 was one of those years,' Beshear said. Read more
